Surge Protection Upgrade for a Canadian Hydropower Station

A Canadian utility was upgrading a remote hydroelectric power station to feed more renewable energy into the transmission grid. The project included new transformers and an extension of the 230 kV switchyard.

During a late-stage design review, the utility realised that the existing surge protection concept would not be sufficient for the new configuration. Higher electrical stresses, longer connections and harsh climate conditions increased the risk for the insulation and high-voltage equipment – and the outage window for the upgrade was already fixed.

Tridelta Meidensha was asked to step in and provide a robust and quickly available surge arrester solution for this critical hydropower project.

Canadian Hydropower – Tough Conditions for Surge Protection

Remote hydroelectric power station with extension of 230 kV switchyard
New transformers and line connections increased overvoltage and energy stress
Existing surge protection layout no longer sufficient for the upgraded configuration
Harsh Canadian climate with temperatures down to –40 °C
Very limited outage window for the station upgrade:
- commissioning date already fixed
- standard delivery times from many suppliers longer than remaining schedule

The utility needed a revised surge arrester concept that could handle hydropower-specific stresses, severe weather and a tight project timeline.

From System Study to Delivery – Aligned from Day One

Tridelta Meidensha engineering team analysed:
- system data and insulation levels
- lightning and switching overvoltage scenarios
- specific constraints of the hydropower site and 230 kV yard
Based on this study, we proposed a set of high-voltage surge arresters for:
- generator step-up transformers
- 230 kV switchyard and line terminations
Recommended and supplied 230 kV-class arresters with:
- high energy capability and mechanical strength
- verified low-temperature performance for cold-climate operation
To protect the schedule, we synchronised:
- engineering, production and test documentation
- packaging and logistics for overseas transport and remote-site handling

Result: the complete arrester package was manufactured and shipped within the agreed delivery window, ready for installation during the planned outage.
